CASA AZIMUTE

Casa Azimute only recently opened it’s doors, but it already gained quite a following. This brand new design B&B, tucked away in the Alentejo countryside, is a place full of contrast. Where old meets new and the past blends with the future. If you love being surrounded by nature as much as you enjoy good food and great wine, this place is just for you. We spoke with their founders Andy Didden and Danny Puype prior to opening. For many years they have been dreaming about opening a B&B and in July of this year that dream finally came true.

Why was this property the perfect place to start your B&B dream?
“We basically bought a jungle in Portugal, with no electricity, no water, nothing but amazing views and wonderful nature. The place was abandoned for over 40 years and at some point it wasn’t even possible to enter. It took the real estate agent 2,5 hours to show us the entire property. It was too big, too wild and too much work. But we knew that it would not be possible to find something better. From great views to the city of Estremoz and the hills of Serra d’Ossa to being situated within easy walking distance to all the local amenities. It had everything and so much more.”

What can we expect from our stay at Casa Azimute?

“Casa Azimute is going to be a very modern, design B&B. With warm elements, wonderful views and great service we want to create a place that looks contemporary cool, but feels like home. We want to offer our guests as much privacy or personal contact as they need, something you don’t get when you stay in a hotel. The property includes nearly 28 hectare of endless possibilities. We organize walking tours with a local guide and have (e-)bicycles for rent. The main house is equipped with a living room, a shop and a meeting room. Guest can relax by the swimming pool or in our massage room.”

What can you tell us about the rooms?
“Nature is very important at Casa Azimute. All rooms and suites will have large windows overlooking the environment. Each of them has either a private terrace or a patio. Two of our suites and one of our rooms even have outdoor beds, so sleeping under the beautiful sky full of stars is definitely possible. In addition, we brought many authentic elements into the rooms, such as ‘Artevida mosaicos hidraulicos’ mosaic tiles made in the region and ‘Mizette mantas alentejanas’ carpets made in an old factory in Monsaraz. One of our rooms is designed for people with special needs.

What are you most proud of?

“We really started from the bottom. We had to learn Portuguese, find a property, look for an architect and so on. Every detail, from the name to the design of the house, has been carefully thought about. It wasn’t always easy, but we made it possible to really create something of our own.”
